On Sunday June 29, the race finals for the 92nd Pikes Peak International Hill Climb was held in Pikes Peak of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Drivers Greg Tracy and Hiroshi Masuoka dominate the Electric Vehicle division in the innovative Mitsubishi MiEV Evolution III racing prototype and they scored an impressive 1-2 finish.

PPIHC_1After posting the fastest time of 9 minutes 8.188 seconds – a new record for the category – Greg Tracy won the Electric Modified Division honors and finishing second a mere 2.4 seconds behind overall winner Romain Dumas and his gasoline-powered Le Mans sports car prototype.

Japanese rally racing legend Hiroshi Masuoka recorded an excellent runner-up finish just behind teammate Tracy with a time of 9 minutes 12.204 seconds, what also means the 3rd position overall.

With his triumphant pace in the 2014 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, American Greg Tracy is the first participant in the event’s long-running history to record a sub-10 minute lap time in both two-wheel as well as four-wheel racing categories. “The Mitsubishi Motors team prepared a fantastic car for me. This victory was truly a team effort,” said Greg Tracy. “I want to thank the team and also Masuoka-san for developing such a phenomenal racing machine in the MiEV Evolution III.”

Last year winner Nobuhiro ‘Monster” Tajima on the E-RUNNER Pikes Peak Special was 4th in line to start. He dashed out of the starting line while maximizing traction by keeping the tires under control and took each corner to corner carefully to the top of the mountain. During the race the temperature increase caused the onboard protection system to engage and slowed the vehicle down. Despite this problem, Monster Tajima crossed the finish line with the 3rd fastest time in the category and 4th overall.

Monster Tajima comments: “This year I am both disappointed and pleased at the same time. Yes of course, I am disappointed that I did not win. However I am greatly pleased that our work in promoting electric vehicles have raised so much awareness that even a major motor company such as Mitsubishi Motor is inspired to win the race at full force. Now Tesla, Toyota, and Honda are also participating in the electric car division. I am hoping that this movement would catch more speed where the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb race would be known as the forefront of tackling the environmental problems we face today. I give kudos to the Mitsubishi Motor Team that have won this merciless race. Congratulations!”

Additional news this year, electric vehicles took 2nd to 4th place in the overall standings. While high-powered gasoline engine cars have traditionally filled the higher-ranks in the previous years, the recent change in results prove the advantage and potentiality of electric vehicle.
